Sometimes when planning outfit, I’ll build the whole thing around one item. For example, if it’s new, or it’s a bit different. This will usually be something like a dress, or a jacket – accessories rarely make the cut of being the starting point for the outfit. These sunglasses however were the first things I bought in steps of creating May’s Outfit of the Month. I saw them in Urban Outfitters and they challenged me. It’s like they laughed and said to me “Mabel, you think you pull these off without looking like a 90s barbie doll or a toddler at the beach?”

Well I think I succeeded. They’re definitely statement. They’re not what usually comes to mind when you think of ‘glamour’ or ‘sophistication’, but I’m usually game for anything endorsed by the Hadid sisters. I thought I should stay well away from anything too typically girly, and I wanted to play up the retro vibe.
This brought me to these jeans from Mango. They’re a daring shape, but such a breath of fresh air in a world of Topshop joni jeans. I love the stripe down the side as it adds a sporty and 90s touch to them, as well as the shape being so dramatic they’d be great to dress up with a bralet, perspex heels and big earrings for a cool evening look.

Since the jeans and sunglasses are both pretty statement, I found a simple top that would compliment them. This sweatshirt from H&M is great, I love wearing bright whites in spring, and the lace up and eyelet back detail sets in apart and adds a bit more style to an otherwise plain sweatshirt. I then finished off the look with these little heeled sandals in a pale pink satin from Primark which are an absolute steal! Nice and simple, perfect for spring and for adding a bit of height if you have short legs like me!
